October Poll Question: Have you ever yelled anything at a Golf Tournament?

How great would it be if this were a thing?

How great would it be if this were a thing?

I have attended exactly two professional golf tournaments:  The PGA Championship at Valhalla in 2014 and the Senior PGA Championship in 2015.  Both were incredible experiences, though decidedly nothing like what I imagine the Ryder Cup environment was this fall at Hazeltine.

Seeing what professional golfers can do with a club and a golf ball up close is astounding.  The sound of their club impacting their golf ball is nothing like what I hear on our annual guys’ getaway golf trip.

However, at neither event, did the thought even remotely cross my mind to yell anything at the golfers, either specifically at or about the golfer, or one of those terrible clichés that gets recited for nearly every tee shot in a major championship.

You know what I mean.  “You ‘Da Man.”  “Get in the Hole!” “Mashed Potatoes.”  Or that most vile, “Baba Booey.”

I don’t understand the asinine mentality of trying to get your 2 seconds of fame by being “that guy” who belts out one of these ridiculous, annoying phrases over and over and over.  I never have and probably never will.

To each their own, I suppose. But I wish these really were the signs that marshals and volunteers used: they're the most accurate reflection of my feelings.

To each their own, I suppose. But I wish these really were the signs that marshals and volunteers used: they’re the most accurate reflection of my feelings.

But, it keeps happening, so maybe I’m in the curmudgeonly minority.

I do attend a lot of college football games.  I cheer for our beloved Kentucky Wildcats loudly.  Mainly when they’re on defense or in anticipation of a crucial play.

My cheers are pretty much universally supportive of the Wildcats, though I’ve consistently booed Steve Spurrier, Bobby Petrino, and referee’s bad calls and will continue without apology.

I may work in a snappy quip in an attempt to get a laugh or nod from some of our stadium section regulars, but I certainly don’t repeat it on every single play like the catch-phrase guy does at golf tournaments.

So I put it to you, Dear Readers:  Have you ever yelled anything just to be heard at a golf tournament?  Either at a specific golfer or just in general for laughs or attention?

If you have, what was your War Cry?  And why?

  1. David,

I have been to a few tournaments and have yelled something once. It was behind the 3rd green of Pebble Beach at the 2010 U.S.Open. As Phil walked onto the green to size up his birdie putt, without even thinking, I simply became possessed and yelled “you the man Phil!”…and that was my one and only yelling experience at a golf tourney.

    Cheers
    Josh
