March Question of the Month: What’s the longest iron you carry?

If only I were genuinely talented, perhaps I'd keep a jigger and a brassie in my playing rotation.

If only I were genuinely talented, perhaps I’d keep a jigger and a brassie in my playing rotation.

With the recent release of Golf Digest’s annual equipment Hot List,  my perennial evaluation of what’s in my golf bag and daydreaming about new clubs commenced in earnest.

I’m generally happy with my clubs.  In the course of my year of golf lessons, I discovered that any deficiencies resulting from putting a club on the ball almost exclusively derive from problems with the soldier rather than the rifle, so to speak.

As noted in one of my earlier rants on long irons versus hybrids, hybrids are all the rage, and for good reason.  Long irons can be hard to hit well, especially for the mid- and high-handicappers among us.

However, I’m keeping my 3-iron.  I finally know how to (and how not to) hit it.  Maybe when I get a little older and can’t compress the ball as well as I do now, I’ll consider adding another hybrid to my repertoire.

For now, my club line-up will continue to begin driver, 3-wood, 3-hybrid, 3-iron…and on down.  But I do wonder if I’m not just being stubborn for the sake of stubbornness.

So, Dear Readers, I am putting the question to you: What is the longest iron that you currently carry in your bag?
